Why Is It Important To Understand My Child's Teeth From A Young Age?

Detecting problems at a young age and starting treatment early can ensure the best and usually quicker results.

Removable appliances (better known as “plates”) are usually used in children which are still growing and have some primary teeth present. The benefits of a removable appliance is that can be taken out for sports and tooth-brushing.

This early intervention takes advantage of the fact that a child's jaw is still growing. For example, a device called a palatal expander may be used to enlarge the child's jaw. Once the arch is the adequate size, there is a better chance that the adult teeth will emerge naturally where they should.

Such plates can be used before fixed braces, or to help correct a minor misalignment, thereby reducing the need for prolonged orthodontic treatment through braces as your child grows. To find out your child's options and whether there may be alternatives to getting braces, make an appointment to see our approachable and friendly dentists.

To this day, the first thing that I do every morning is look in the mirror. I'll tell myself, 'Look at your skin. Look at your teeth and your smile. You are beautiful.'

Which Signs or Symptoms Indicate That Orthodontic Treatment May Be Necessary?

You should always watch for signs and habits in your child that signal the need for early intervention and orthodontic treatment:
  • Mouth breathing
  • Prolonged finger or thumb sucking
  • Difficulty in chewing or biting food
  • Constantly knocking front teeth
  • Constantly biting cheeks or lower teeth keep hitting the palate (roof of the mouth)
  • Early or delayed loss of primary teeth
Early intervention to fix your child's crowded mouth or misaligned teeth could involve braces, other orthodontic appliances and even treatments like Myobrace or Invisalign.

She laughs at everything you say. Why? Because she has fine teeth.
